National Holistic Institute Will Add Los Angeles Campus
NHI Acquires Touch Therapy Institute in Encino, CA

The National Holistic Institute will begin offering classes in Los Angeles in August 2006. To jumpstart operations in Los Angeles, NHI acquired the Touch Therapy Institute (TTI), Los Angeles’ premier massage therapy college. Working with TTI will allow NHI to work with the well-respected faculty and staff of TTI.

“We see a big need in Los Angeles for a high-quality, accredited, and specialized massage therapy college,” said Tim Veitzer, Director of Development for the National Holistic Institute. “We have many employers who are looking for our graduates in Southern California. And, for the second largest metropolitan area in the United States, there are few accredited schools specializing in massage therapy there.”

The campus is centrally located in the San Fernando Valley in Encino, California. Touch Therapy was founded in 1989 and has developed a strong reputation for high-quality education. The Encino campus will offer NHI’s 720-hour program in August or September 2006 utilizing NHI’s accreditation and eligibility for federal financial aid. In addition, Touch Therapy has a well-regarded continuing education schedule which will continue. This includes a class by Leon Chaitow and a Lomi Lomi continuing education trip to Hawaii.

“We’re excited to offer NHI’s nationally accredited program,” said Joe Bob Smith, former owner of the Touch Therapy Institute and Encino Campus Manager for the National Holistic Institute. “Being the state’s largest massage school, serving both Southern and Northern California, will allow us to offer many more benefits to our students and alumni.”

The merger follows the 2005 opening of National Holistic Institute campuses in San Jose and in Petaluma. The National Holistic Institute will consider opening several more campuses around Los Angeles in the upcoming years.

Making "Adjustments" to your Massage Skills for a
Chiropractic Office

by Jim O'Hara and David Casuto

Image Of the numerous job listings we post here at NHI, chiropractic offices seem to have the lion’s share. NHI has a solid relationship with many Bay Area chiropractors largely due to the fact that our graduates offer a skill set that aptly meets the needs of a chiropractic office.

But many students and graduates still wonder: What are the skills needed for a chiropractic office and how are they different from those of private practice or a spa setting? And are these skills distinctively different? The answer is: Yes and no. It’s a matter of emphasis.

The work in a chiropractic office so often focuses on injury rehabilitation, pain management, and stress relief, so you need to “adapt your touch to the specific needs of the client,” says Dr. Cree Guardino of San Jose.

Dr. Mark Wong of Oakland emphasizes the massage therapist’s ability to:

1. Establish rapport quickly with a client
2. Explain the work they are doing
3. Educate the client on how to maintain wellness between visits

To find out what it takes to succeed in both getting the job and performing well in a chiropractic office, we gathered information from several of our partnered chiropractors. Besides your being an excellent overall employee (responsible, punctual, professional, etc.) here’s what they want from you:

1. Science Knowledge - A good foundation in anatomy, physiology and the applied sciences
• “Please work on this client’s left scalenes…”
• “Be cautious near the swollen lymph nodes in her neck…”
• “You’ll need to release his right psoas….”

2. Relevant Modalities - Able to employ Deep Tissue and Myofascial Techniques
• “Let’s have you do cross-fiber and longitudinal release on his hamstrings…”
• “Release the fascial tightness in her lower back…”

3. Stretch techniques on specific muscles
• “His left quadratus lumborum needs stretching…”

4. Timing - The ability to adapt the length of your massage
• “Client A is here for a 15 minute session on his neck, then Client B gets 30 minutes on her upper back and Client C is here for a one-hour, full-body massage…”

5. Knowledgeable about injuries
• “His whiplash is too recent, so work only on the lower back…”
• (Remember the other pathologies for each joint you took in MFT classes at NHI?)

6. Sports Massage/Swedish – Many chiropractors specialize in working exclusively with athletes and injuries, making Sports massage knowledge a valuable modality.

7. Acupressure/Shiatsu – More and more chiropractors are embracing the “Eastern” side of medicine due to clients’ demand and the documented effectiveness of such treatment.

8. Chair Massage – Chiropractors will sometimes use Chair Massage as a tool to market their business. Practice this sequence and be knowledgeable of its utility.

One comment we received from an NHI grad working in a Chiropractic setting was: “Working in a chiropractic office really helped me solidify my knowledge of anatomy, and gave me confidence in working with clients in pain.”

As you can see, working in a chiropractic office requires certain skill sets; from time management skill to academic knowledge. Remembering these tips that come right from the source, while using all the valuable skills you learned in your education and in your clinic will put you ahead of the game every time!

Now get crackin'!

Ben Habr, Professional Massage Therapist

Image NHI has seen their share of colorful, comical and emotional graduation speeches. And every once in a while there is one that makes us laugh and cry all at once. Below is the transcript of one of those from a recent graduate, Ben Habr. Thank YOU, Ben for your hard work and diligence and your heartfelt (and funny) words...congrats!

Thank You, NHI!

So I spent about 2 or 3 years doing a lot of sitting around on my butt. One afternoon I saw a commercial on TV 3 times within a few hours. Since that day I haven’t done very much sitting on my butt. Thanks NHI!

I used to drive a bucket Honda. I liked the car a lot, but I always wanted something a little more fun. If I didn’t drive that Honda to school every day then it probably never would have died! Now I have the car I always thought about! Thanks NHI!

Driving from school to Fremont every day I remembered really fast in the beginning of school why I hate traffic in the Bay Area during evening rush hour. But after a massage it’s not that bad because you just feel so damn good! Thanks NHI!

I've learned all about business, marketing, insurance, student loans, credit, time management, communications, how to make a powerful presentation in front of a group of people, and how to make a great resume. Thanks NHI!

I’ve learned how to work with the ever so loving general public in the student clinic. Thanks NHI!

My sister in-law is pregnant. I’ve had a few chances to give her neck, shoulder, and foot massages. From my older brother who was able to get a few good nights rest. Thanks NHI!

I’ve learned how to increase my own energy, manage stress, and balance my chi. Thanks NHI!

I met a man named Dr. Richman at my externship site and he has taught me some of the coolest most interesting things. I look up to Dr. Richman very much and will see him for the rest of my life. For showing me Dr. Richman. Thanks NHI!

I had 2 bumps on the back of my neck for a while. I learned that they were lymph nodes and how to massage the bumps away! No more bumps. Thanks NHI!

I learned during our Myofascial Therapies (MFT) classes that the pain in my shoulder I thought was caused by an injury when I was 17 was actually caused by an even older injury when I was 14. Since then I fixed it and it doesn’t hurt anymore after years of constant pain. Thanks NHI!

A few weeks ago I had a general check up with my family physician that occasionally has medical school students in the room during a visit. I found my checkup to be very entertaining when the doctor was quizzing his students on anatomy and kinesiology and I was quick to answer 9 out of 10 questions off the top of my head before they could. That was pretty cool. Thanks NHI!

About half way through our school year I had a bicycle accident. It hurt a lot, but since I knew some Swedish massage techniques and MFT I was able to speed my painful injury. Thanks NHI!

Just last week I stumbled down a few stairs and hurt my ankle really badly. I learned a process called RICE during our sports massage series and here I am no longer hobbling around the school! Thanks NHI!

Sometimes the truth hurts, but here at NHI I learned how to make it not hurt so much by telling the truth with compassion.

I met a lot of really great people, some whom I will be friends with for a long long time. I have had some of the best teachers and mentors here that could never be matched anywhere else. Thank you NHI.

I can’t thank the teachers here enough for all your passion for massage therapy, and all your time and dedication that you have put into our education.

For those behind the scenes that keep things running while I’m in the class room. Thank you

Most of all, I'm no longer the guy in the sales dept, or the guy at the cash register, I’m not working in a stock room, or loading lumber into cars and driving a forklift.

I now have the skills and tools to call myself a Massage Therapist and Health Educator.

My life has had dramatic changes in the past 10 months which will help me to grow myself and to build a prosperous and happy career. The past 10 months have been the best learning experiences a guy like me could ever ask for. I love what I have learned in this school and it has become just as much a part of me as my own 2 feet. None of this would be possible if it weren't for the hardworking fantastic staff here in this school. If it weren't for them I wouldn’t be on my way to having work I love.

When I think of the past 10 months of my life, and my future and how fantastic it’s going to be, the only words that come to mind are thanks NHI.

SCIENCE CORNER - ANSWERS!
1. Answer is D

2. Answer is B

3. Answer: Both are the "socket" part of the Ball & Socket joints of the hip and shoulder joints, respectively. The Acetabulum is formed by the ishium, illium and pubis bones, some time around puberty. The Glenoid fossa is a very shallow socket, thus allowing the most range-of-motion of any joint in the body.
